So you’ve just awoken to the dawn chorus. The sunlight is shining through your tent canopy and you can hear the distant sound of other campers beginning to awake. Is it time to get up and make your campfire breakfast? Maybe ten more minutes…
That’s the beauty of camping, you can slow down and take your time. The same goes for making camp breakfast. The first thing you’ll want to do is put the kettle on, this takes a little longer on a campfire than your standard electric kettle but somehow that just means it tastes even sweeter.
Once you’ve had your cup of morning tea or coffee it’s time to start thinking about breakfast. Here are some of our top camping breakfast choices to help you on your way.
The Classic Full Camping Breakfast
It’s a classic for a reason. It’s also super filling so will set you up for a day of exploring and adventuring. Cooking a full english breakfast on the campfire can be a little different to at home but of course, like any campfire cooking, it’ll taste even better.
- Sausages (locally sourced if possible)
- Bacon (as above)
- Baked Beans
- Bread for toasting
We like to cook the sausages and bacon directly on the grill but you could use a frying pan here. For the eggs, keep things simple and go for fried or scrambled if there is a group of you. Save on dishes by taking the lid off the tin of beans and popping this straight on the grill, just make sure you use a glove when picking this up. Toast the bread on the grill or on a stick over the fire (a good job for the kids to keep them busy). Voila! One hell of a campfire breakfast.
It can sound a little daunting to cook pancakes on a campfire but it really couldn’t be any easier with a little preparation. Pre-make your pancake batter (we like BBC Goodfood’s recipe) and then place this in an old, empty (and cleaned) ketchup bottle. All you need to do in the morning is heat a little butter in your pan, then squirt the batter right out of the bottle. No fuss and no mess. Wait until little bubbles appear in the batter and then you know it’s ready to flip. We like these simply with a little syrup but it’s also good with berries, banana and nuts. Yum!
The Camping Breakfast Bap
Exactly what it says on the tin.
- Bap Filling – sausages/bacon/egg/mushrooms
We like a bacon and egg bap for a quick and easy campfire breakfast. Fry up your bacon over the grill, fry an egg in a pan next to it. Pop both in a bap and smother in ketchup or brown sauce. Works just as nicely with vegetarian sausages for the non-meaters out there!
Perhaps not one for the middle of summer but if you’re doing any camping with us in Spring or Autumn then this is a great choice for your campfire breakfast. Packed full of all the good stuff and will give you energy for hours of campsite fun. This recipe should serve two so scale up for different numbers.
- One cup of Oats
- Two cups of water
- A splash of vanilla
- Fruit (your choice)
- Nuts (your choice)
Place oats, water and vanilla into a pot and place of the heat. Keep stirring and bring to the boil and once boiling take off the heat and add your fruit and nuts. We like raspberries, blackberries and pecans but you can choose anything you like! Place a lid on top. This should be ready to eat in around 5 minutes. Why not try roasting some apples in the campfire with a little cinnamon and add this to the mix?
A filling and delicious campfire breakfast!
- Cut Potatoes
- Baby Tomatoes
- Spring Onions
You’ll need to pre-boil your potatoes, so add these to a pan of water over the fire and cook until tender. Cut the bacon into bits and fry this in a pan over the grill. Add the potatoes to the pan and crush these down a little. Cook until they are starting to brown. Add the tomatoes and push the hash to the side of the pan. If you’re pan isn’t big enough just grab another for the eggs. Fry an egg per person and when this is ready plate up a big pile of hash, topped with an egg and a sprinkling of spring onions.
Camping Hack: You can make this recipe even easier by using frozen mini potatoes like these. If you bring them in your cool box with you they should be mostly defrosted by the time it comes to cooking. Just throw these in the pan and fry off until crispy!
Pre-Made Campfire Breakfast Burritos
This is a good campfire breakfast for those with little patience for chopping and prepping outside.
- Tortilla Wraps
- Can of refriend beans
- Cheddar Cheese
Fry your bacon until crispy and take off the heat. In a separate pan heat some oil then add the whisked eggs and a drop of milk. Let this cook a little and then start to slowly stir until soft but not runny. Add the bacon, cheese and spinach (we’re essentally making an omelette). Once ready take off the heat. Spread a piece of foil out onto the surface, add a tortilla and spread a little of the refriend beans. Add some of the omelette and then wrap up into a burrito inside the foil. Store these in your cool box and then when you’re ready for breakfast all you need to do is pop these into the coals for a few minutes to heat up. These should take around 5 minutes each side but this does depend on how hot your fire is.
Waffles on a campfire? Yes! Grab yourself a cast iron waffle iron like this one. Use the same recipe for the pancakes above and hey presto, waffles while camping.
