Sussex vineyards and our campsites

English wine is becoming more and more popular as viticulture in this country matures. Sussex is at the centre of it all and there are several Sussex vineyards within easy reach of our campsites. Stay at any of our Campsite locations and you can set off on a vineyard tour. East Sussex, where Beech Estate is situated, is home to more than 40 vineyards.

The return of Sussex vineyards

The Romans are thought to have planted vines in this country but today’s English wine industry has its roots in the 1950s. Sustainability and the sunshine of the south of England have helped boost the industry. These two factors mean Sussex is at the heart of the renaissance and there’s been a big increase in the number of vineyards here. At the same time, the English wine industry has matured and both the popularity and quality of English wines has grown.

Many growers and producers are so enthusiastic about this burgeoning industry that they welcome visitors for tours and tastings. One of the longest-established vineyards in the country, it was founded in 1971. It now has 21 acres of vines and produces still and sparkling white and rosé wines.

You’ll also find Hidden Spring Vineyard around a twenty minute drive from Beech Estate Campsite. This is a small independent vineyard owned and run by two enthusiastic wine lovers, keen to demonstrate the high quality English wine available and to help others appreciate the best of British. At Hidden Spring you can take a tour and tasting for £20 that lasts around one hour and thiry minutes.

A little closer at just a fifteen minute drive away is Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard. The vineyard here attracts some 5,000 visitors annually to its Vineyard, Woodland Nature Trail and Wine tasting. Tours start from £16 per person.

Within an hour’s drive there are many more including The Bluebell Vineyard, which is very close to our West Sussex campsite at Wild Boar Wood. There are also several on the South Downs including Ridgeview and Court Garden at Ditchling.
