The Herstmonceux Observatory is just a twelve minute drive from Beech Estate Campsite. While we can’t quite call ourselves a Herstmonceux camping site, we’re pretty close. It’s one of the closest tourist attractions to our campsite and a popular place for campers to visit. You can get hands-on with science and discover lots about space.
Kids (and their parents) will love the hands-on science, telescopes and stargazing at the world-renowned observatory at Herstmonceux. There are lots of interactive science exhibits, both indoors and out, which will keep the children occupied for hours. It’s a particular favourite of our campers, who overwhelmingly speak favourably upon their return.
Set in beautiful Sussex countryside, the science centre has a reasonably priced cafe and picnic area, so you can easily take your own lunch.

The village of Herstmonceux is a picturesque East Sussex village. It’s name is derived from the Anglo-saxon word for a wooded hill and the noble family who once lived in the area. Now the village is home to between 2,000 and 3,000 people. Just a couple of miles from the village centre is Herstmonceux Castle. The 15th Century, red brick, moated castle is set in 300 acres of woodland with beautiful themed gardens. Certainly worth making a day out of the observatory and castle if they both take your fancy.
