Pevensey Castle

Pevensey Castle is around ten miles from Beech Estate Campsite.

Another of the 1066 country-linked English Heritage sites, Pevensey Castle is where William the Conqueror landed back in 1066. The history of this remarkable site stretches back much further than that though as before the Norman conquest, which saw a Norman castle built here, it was home to a Roman fort dating back to the 4th century. English Heritage describe the castle as “chronicling, more graphically than any other fortress, the story of British south east coast fortresses”.

A new museum has also opened here recently. The museum showcases the collection of around 3,500 objects excavated between 1906 and 1995. The collection provides a fascinating insight into life at the castle for over 1,300 years, but is particularly strong for the Roman and medieval periods.
