Things to do

Lewes is around twenty four miles away from Beech Estate Campsite.

It is the county town of East Sussex and best known across the UK for its traditional and lively bonfire night celebrations which take place on November 5 each year.

Historic Lewes is nestled in a valley of the South Downs, where the River Ouse cuts through the hills exposing steep chalk cliffs. The people of the town are proud of their town and help to keep it thriving with many independent retailers, cafes and coffee shops on its narrow streets.

The arts and culture are of great importance in the town

There are many galleries here and it was here that one of the first farmers’ markets of the current revival, took place in 1990. They have even launched their own currency to encourage people to shop locally. The farmers’ market takes place in Cliffe High Street on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

With its long history, Lewes is home to many historic buildings. Just wandering the streets of the town is a pleasure for anyone interested in history or architecture. There is a real mixture of styles from different times. Notable buildings that you can pay a visit to include Lewes Castle which has its roots in the 1066 Norman conquest, the 16th-century Anne of Cleeves House, and the remains of Lewes Priory.

Lewes also has an historic outdoor swimming pool. Pells Pool, a freshwater lido dating from 1860 is the UK’s oldest. It is open from May to September and only heated by the sun.

Southover Grange Gardens is a little haven and a great place to visit in Lewes with kids. It makes a great spot for a picnic and a walk if small legs have tired of the town. There’s no playground but plenty of beautifully-planted flower beds and lawns perfect for a relax or runaround.

In Victorian times Lewes was home to seven breweries – now there is only one which is still functioning, Harveys. You’ll find their brews across Sussex visit the shop at the brewery in the town centre for the full range.

For glamping near Lewes you might also want to consider Wild Boar Wood Campsite, which is just over 10 miles away near Horsted Keynes.
