Things to do

Hastings is around ten miles away from Beech Estate Campsite.

Hastings has a long history as a market town and fishing port. It also remains home to the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe. It was at Hastings that William the Conqueror arrived in Britain in 1066. The town is home to the remains of the first castle he built. You can visit the remains of the castle and learn about the history of Norman conquest by visiting the site where a 20-minute audio-visual programme explains the 1066 Story.

Battle Abbey and the Battle of Hastings

West Hill is also home to St Clements Caves, once used by smugglers. The caves now house a tourist attraction, Smugglers Adventure, with life-sized models and tableaux explaining the story of smuggling.

A funicular railway provides a short cut between the top of West Hill, from where there are great views, to George Street, at sea level where there are cafes and book shops. You also get great views of the jumbled roof tops of Hastings Old Town from here.

Old Town is well worth exploring

It has independent traders, pubs, coffee shops and artisan bakers all nestling in the old buildings. It is really the heart of the regeneration of Hastings which flourished as a seaside resort in the late 18th and 19th century. But like many English seaside towns, Hastings lost some of its sheen as people began to travel abroad more often in the 20th century.

The arts have also played a major part in rejuvenating the town. Art lovers might like to visit the Jerwood Gallery, which is situated on The Stade and houses a modern art collection. The beach and the fishing boats are just a few steps away from the gallery and the Blue Reef Aquarium is nearby. As are the traditional seaside attractions of ice cream shops, amusements arcades and resides at the Flamingo Amusement Park.

West of The Stade, about a mile along the promenade, is Hastings Pier, which reopened in 2016 after a lengthy restoration. Find out the latest on the pier at the Hastings Pier Charity website.

As a modern town Hastings also has larger supermarkets, a theatre, cinema, museum and modern shops.
